Hiatal Hernia Surgery
A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of the stomach bulges through the diaphragm, the muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen. The diaphragm has a small opening (hiatus) through which the esophagus passes before connecting to the stomach. When the stomach pushes through this opening, it results in a hiatal hernia.
Hiatal Hernia or Diaphragmatic Hernia
Hiatal hernia is a defect in the diaphragm that causes the stomach to migrate into the chest/thoracic cavity. It can cause symptoms like chest pain, vomiting, acid reflux and difficulty swallowing. Hiatal hernia is usually diagnosed with endoscopy, but it can also be found on other imaging modalities.
Hiatal hernias can be repaired through robotic or laparoscopic approach through the abdomen to relieve the symptoms and prevent from developing complications in future
A comprehensive evaluation is performed preoperatively which may include endoscopy, x ray and other diagnostic tests to make sure the surgery is tailored to give you the maximal benefit
Acid Reflux
Acid reflux or heartburn is a very common problem. In some patient’s medications do not resolve symptoms of heartburn. In certain patients, severe reflux can cause inflammatory changes in the esophagus. These patients may be candidates for anti-reflux surgeries or fundoplication. Fundoplication can be performed with a minimally invasive approach and lead to long term durable improvement in heartburn. Most patients can come off their medications after these procedures.
If you have acid reflux and interest in exploring surgical option, contact Dr Ajmal office.
